Everyone wants to be and rapper right? Well there are some
basic things to consider in order becoming one. I will go through the basics of
what anyone needs to become a rapper in today’s society. I will cover the
simple needs such as: name, genre style, beats, and producers. After reading
this article you will understand what you need for the “basics” of being a
rapper.
- 1) Your Name – this is a very critical part of the becoming a rapper. Your name is what they will call you, refer others to, search for when they want ur album, mixtape, etc. you want a name that is catchy, easy to say, no too hard to spell, and kind of reflects the music you will be creating. Go through a few names before just choosing one to get grounds on how you feel. One thing you don’t want to do is continuously change your name simply because it will make it that harder for you potential fans to remember you.
- 2) Genre style – this is another important factor for becoming a rapper. At this age of the “rap community” there are a few different types of rapping. You have style such as: gangsta rap, party rap, trap, old skool, commercial, hip-hop, underground, etc. choosing this will probably be influenced by what you grew up around throughout your life. This will also set the location of where you need to promote and starting your niche.
- 3) Beats – this is another very important piece of the rapper puzzle. The beat should reflect your genre right? You shouldn’t have a techno beat rapping like naz not unless you’re trying something new. Build with you initial base with beats that fit your genre, and then branch out. It doesn’t hurt to lease beats when starting. Leasing beats will save you a ton of money when starting off! Purchasing exclusive beats will be original but can when your fan base is surrounded by your family and friends, you really don’t have a high demand. I suggest leasing beats when starting off your rap career. When you began to get a buzz and people demand for your music then began to look for exclusive beats in order for you to have a legit chance of getting signed of booked for a label or showcase. You can easily find beats with today technology by simply logging on to google and searching “Buy Beats Online."
- 4) Producer – as a rapper, your producer should be your best friend when it comes to business. This is the person that will make everything come together. Choosing a producer is like choosing a house. You don’t look and buy from the first one. You browse around until you find the one with the best price and best quality that fits your personal prospective. Your producer should be able to either record you at high quality and mix or master you vocals for performance, radio and commercial distribution. DON’T RECORD WITH LOW QUALITY. Understand that family members and friends that do it for a hobby or a quick buck will get your music thrown in the trash. If the quality isn’t there then DO NOT get your music recorded, mix/mastered from that producer. A producer should always be on his game with knowledge and overall skill level, whether it’s just beat making or actual recording.
This concludes the first part of becoming a rapper and
beginning your rap career. The next article will cover why your should critique
your music before showcasing, how to get noticed, and overall hustle of being arapper. Until then, that this article and put it to use and get your rap career
